Death to the old

What might William Blake mean by Enitharmon’s words from the Four Zoas?

In the terms of my Mythology, is it Woman as Seraph?
Is it the end of the relationship?
Is it unrequited love?
Is it death to the innocent and rebirth as a Child of Love?
Is it all of these?

The joy of Woman is the death of her most best-belovèd,
Who dies for love of her
In torments of fierce jealousy and pangs of adoration:

Blake vision on Dr John Dunn. Imagine

Rather like Rudolf Steiner, later in the 19th century, William Blake knew that mere perception needed an additional component if man were to possess more than an animal-like relationship to the world around him.

Vision for Blake was reality, not the simple cataloguing of sense impressions as the psychologists of Blake’s time and our own maintain to be true.

Blake’s vision required a proactive element, an imaginative element, which is something that nature alone cannot produce. Imagination is uniquely the product of man’s mind alone.

With the above in mind, the following words of Blake might be more clearly understood.

I question not my corporeal or vegetative eye any more than I would a window concerning a sight; I look through it and not with it.

Blake’s reality was born of active creative endeavour.

A picture from William Blake’s Jerusalem shows Los proudly surveying the results of his strenuous labour at the red hot forge. There is a spectre in the picture, an alter ego to Los, actually shown splitting off Los’s back. Los personifies the creative impulse, whilst the spectre personifies the nagging doubt about the worth of a creative vocation. If the creative act defines what it means to be human, then the spectre stands for a lower order of sub-human existence.

Los cannot escape the spectre, which

…fell shuddering before him,
Watching his time with glowing
eyes to leap upon his prey.

Los’s response is defiant:

I must create a system, or be
enslaved by another man’s;
I will not reason and compare:
my business is to create.

Los’s reality is born of active creative endeavour. He will not be dropped into the ready-made system of a distant Jehovah. To ‘reason and compare’ is the business of the followers of Urizen, not his.

Love or chaos

The materialists and the separationists* have much to answer for.

They perpetuate the materialist myth that the world as we know it can exist without man. The truth is - the world only exists because we know it.

No tree falls in the forest unless observed,
A shifting of molecules, an event occurred.
There was a stirring in the viscous soup
And man applied the girding hoop.

The materialists and separationists perceive a world devoid of love; to them it is hard, cold, colourless, silent and dead.
William Blake understood these implications and utterly despised them.

Deduct from a rose its redness, from a lily its whiteness, from a diamond its hardness, from a sponge its softness, from an oak its height, from a daisy its lowness, and rectify everything in nature as the philosophers do, and then we shall return to chaos. (Annotations to Lavater.)

As Blake knew well, the choice is between love or chaos.

I thought the two following quotes by William Blake and Graham Greene were apposite to the innocents in the Mythology.

This life's dim windows of the soul
Distorts the heavens from pole to pole
And leads you to believe a lie
When you see with, not through, the eye.

― William Blake
The Everlasting Gospel

It is not the windows that you see with, rather you see through the windows.

It is not the eye you see with, rather you see through the eye.

That is… you should see through the windows and eye, with your own active consciousness and living thought. The danger of not doing this is that the immediate sensory images presented to the window or eye might be taken for the truth if not thought through.

This is the danger facing the innocents, which opens them to manipulation by the children of Urizen, who will happily provide the images to windows, eyes and screens.

The Children of Love are in grave danger from the manipulated innocents.

Innocence always calls mutely for protection when we would be so much wiser to guard ourselves against it: innocence is like a dumb leper who has lost his bell, wandering the world, meaning no harm.

Were you one of the Seraphim?

Enticing eyes on Dr John Dunn. Were you one of the Seraphim?

Were you such a one? Your eyes at once ignored and enticed. You might have been. Life was never the same again.

And you became a distant star,

shining in the firmament from past light years.

I stare and wonder who the residents are…

Can they be wholly alien in their hopes and fears?

In the Mythology Seraphim enjoy the immediate gaze of God, and so are not distinct from God. Their distancing strategy is to occupy innocents and awaken men.

Whoever is a Seraph, that is a lover, is in God and God is in him; even, it maybe said, God and he are one. (Oration on the Dignity of Man, Giovanni Pico della Mirandola).

Man-made to ready-made

Pre-historic peoples perceived gods and goddesses in every river and mountain, expressing their participatory experience of creating the world.

No tree falls in the forest unless observed,
A shifting of molecules, an event occurred.
There was a stirring in the viscous soup
And man applied the girding hoop.

The cultural transformation which led to the worshiping of deities that stood apart from the earth, far off in the heavens, accompanied the withdrawal of man from nature, leaving the wilderness and forest as things apart from the cultivated land, i.e. as freestanding ready-made entities, devoid of man.

Gods and goddesses that once expressed man’s experience of belonging in the world transmuted into distant deities and, still worse, into a single distant God - a progression bound to terminate in skepticism.
