Children of Urizen

They hide amongst the Innocents.

They feed off the Innocents.

They set Innocent against Innocent.

They send the Innocents to war.

You know you've met them,

probably when you've thought about it afterwards.

They don't smile, they sneer.

They look at you with calculation.

Snared in Urizen's net, they are the living dead.

Their lives are empty and uncomplicated.

Being themselves devoid of love,

when they meet Him they murder Love.

God is love; and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. (I John 4:16)

They that dwelleth without love, what are they?

The anti-Love; the masonry of hate; the children of Urizen.

Root them out, pleads Eros to the Innocents, root them out!

Blake on Dr John Dunn. Beulah

In William Blake’s mythology, there is a place called Beulah, which the Innocent might say resembles the traditional idea of Heaven. The Innocent are wrong of course. It differs from the traditional heaven in that it is a temporary place of rest, not a final destination. It is a place in which the do-nothing dumb masses might find contentment. Here the danger lies.

From Beulah, one can be tempted by the followers of Urizen to go down to Generation, the realm of birth and death, a sub-human world, driven by instinct.

Above is Eden: not the peace that passes understanding or the saints’ everlasting rest, but an active strife of contraries that reflects the dynamism of human nature. Eden experiences a kind of warfare, but spiritual warfare that is creative and constructive.

Creativity and constructive…
Only God and man can create something from nothing. The imagination and creativity are related to the First Creator. William Blake considered the human Imagination to be God.

The stained glass is the glory of Leon Cathedral in Spain.

The lower parts of the windows are decorated with vegetable motifs in the lancets and allegories of human realities in the rose windows, the sciences, the arts, the virtues the vices. As a very general rule we can say that at the base we find the mineral world depicted, over that the vegetable kingdom, and in turn over that, the world of mankind, capable of love and hate. In the highest places in the upper windows, shines the church triumphant, with all its legions of the blessed.

Biodiversity is subordinate to man, the angels and God and, arguably, only exists because of man, or, more specifically, man awoken, man touched by the Seraphim.

Without man’s powers of distinction, i.e. the ability to distinguish one thing from another, there would be the polar-opposite of biodiversity, or any diversity for that matter; there would be a return to amorphous oneness; nature would be one viscous soup, there would be too much God.

Angels on Dr John Dunn. Dictates of the angels

Who cares whether William Blake consciously used metaphors or not, he was trying to express a reality that is lost to common thought, i.e. the thought of the Innocents as understood in the Mythology, the living thought that arises simultaneously with sensory perception, but which is lost and seemingly presented back in the form of ‘reality’.

I am under the direction of messengers from Heaven daily and nightly…. But if we fear to do the dictates of our angels and tremble at the tasks set before us, if we refuse to do spiritual acts because of natural fears or natural desires! Who can describe the dismal tortures of such a state. (Letter Blake to Butts 1803)
We should instead understand the lost inner content of ‘reality’ as the messengers from Heaven, which arise as a simultaneous thought-pairing with perception.

By responding to the dictates of the angels, Blake saw the reality born of active creative endeavour, rather than a passive acceptance of the given and ready-made.

What might William Blake mean by Enitharmon’s words from the Four Zoas?

In the terms of my Mythology, is it Woman as Seraph?
Is it the end of the relationship?
Is it unrequited love?
Is it death to the innocent and rebirth as a Child of Love?
Is it all of these?

The joy of Woman is the death of her most best-belovèd,
Who dies for love of her
In torments of fierce jealousy and pangs of adoration:

Blake vision on Dr John Dunn. Imagine

Rather like Rudolf Steiner, later in the 19th century, William Blake knew that mere perception needed an additional component if man were to possess more than an animal-like relationship to the world around him.

Vision for Blake was reality, not the simple cataloguing of sense impressions as the psychologists of Blake’s time and our own maintain to be true.

Blake’s vision required a proactive element, an imaginative element, which is something that nature alone cannot produce. Imagination is uniquely the product of man’s mind alone.

With the above in mind, the following words of Blake might be more clearly understood.

I question not my corporeal or vegetative eye any more than I would a window concerning a sight; I look through it and not with it.

Blake’s reality was born of active creative endeavour.

A picture from William Blake’s Jerusalem shows Los proudly surveying the results of his strenuous labour at the red hot forge. There is a spectre in the picture, an alter ego to Los, actually shown splitting off Los’s back. Los personifies the creative impulse, whilst the spectre personifies the nagging doubt about the worth of a creative vocation. If the creative act defines what it means to be human, then the spectre stands for a lower order of sub-human existence.

Los cannot escape the spectre, which

…fell shuddering before him,
Watching his time with glowing
eyes to leap upon his prey.

Los’s response is defiant:

I must create a system, or be
enslaved by another man’s;
I will not reason and compare:
my business is to create.

Los’s reality is born of active creative endeavour. He will not be dropped into the ready-made system of a distant Jehovah. To ‘reason and compare’ is the business of the followers of Urizen, not his.
