St Maximus on Dr John Dunn. More St Maximus-led thoughts

Dr John Dunn 2022.

I have commenced the task of pulling my most recent writings (blogs etc) together with a view to compiling them into a future publication.

What follows here is a further set of blog entries prompted by the writings of St Maximus, the principal theme here being selfhood.

Arguably, most people never achieve selfhood. They go through lives as empty shells, docile to the point of accepting the world into which they are thrown at birth as a ready-made entity.

St Maximus grappled with this issue, and his writings added a new dimension to my own thinking on the matter of the self.

The self

“For example, Peter, John and Paul are human beings and being a rational animal is an essential characteristic of such humanness. Rationality is essential for being the entity a human being; necessary, but not sufficient to be a self.”

“The essential characteristics are the forms which exist by themselves, while the self indicates a someone of those forms, i.e. someone, the self, who carries the forms in the concrete sense.”

Love and the true self

Most people are never awoken from their petty deluded lives; partly because they never think, partly because their delusions are fed and maintained by others.

Most people never experience love, and by that I mean real love, real painful passion. As a consequence the key to awakening is never turned. Love is all.

“The point at which the deluded individual recognises that he is divinely interconnected with another being’s true self is Love.”

“Love transcends the deluded state inwhich one or both or more true selves are enshrouded, and establishes a relationship of true selves, a communion, however fleeting, during which they more closely track the divine intention laid out for them.”

Gnomic wanting

Here I lay my reading of St Maximus’s thoughts over my reading of Massimo Scaligero. I find parallels between St Maximus’ natural and gnomic wills and Scaligero’s living and reflected thought.

“Before the Fall,Adam and Eve saw each other through the eyes of ‘natural will’, i.e. through Love, which is to say the Logos or God.”

“Following the Fall, having gained knowledge, Adam and Eve objectified each other each other, discovering shame, rather than Love.”

“‘Natural will’ is divine intention, i.e. Love.”

“‘Gnomic will’ is false, deluded and evil; but we will it, i.e. we want it, we take pleasure in the objectified.”

"Only Love overcomes the need for this, there being no shame in love.

Upon reading St Maximus

St Maximus on Dr John Dunn. Upon reading St Maximus

Dr John Dunn 2022.

There follow four blogs that I added back in January, which were influenced one way or another by my readings of St Maximus. To this extent they are rather loosely related, however each of them also relates to the key themes that I have been developing with regard to a future publication. I have been transferring blogs to the archive as a stage in the sifting of material for another book. The four pieces which follow are a small part of the sifting process.

Resurrected creation

“There can be no overcoming of the evil in the human-animal except by the lightning-bolt Logos of thinking, whose force on Earth arises from fulfilling the divine task at the roots of the human being - namely, the victory over death, the Resurrection.”

How He exists

“I find that I am not concerned with the question of whether God (as a True Being) exists or not; rather my concern is how (in what manner or mode) He exists.”

Living thought

“To accept anything as pre-determined prior to the experiencing of it - be it the Logos, or the material world into which we are born - is nothing short of idolatry.”

Life - death - life

The event of Christ is an allegory for the journey the individual must undertake. The Nativity to the Resurrection follows a path of sensory events in which we must discover the suprasensory content, which in turn refers to the cosmic content.

A re-statement of my Cosmogony

Tintoretto's greatest painting on Dr John Dunn. Tintoretto’s Saint George and the Dragon*

A re-statement of my Cosmogony

Dr John Dunn 2022.

Most recently transferred blog to the Archive, building towards collation and future publication.

I felt the need to summarise and this very short piece was the result. Basically, in as few words as possible I ventured to answer:

What was before the beginning?

What was the beginning?

What followed the beginning?

Continuous struggle

In addition I have stated the continuity of struggle needed to fend off that which existed before the beginning, but which still lives on, i.e. the force of evil.

“The struggle to transform error into truth must be continuous, just as Creation as an act of Love must be perpetual.”

*The dragon’s victim, lying dead, is the crucified Jesus. The dragon, symbolic of the murderers of Jesus, is slaughtered by the thrusting spear of the hero, whilst the Queen of Heaven, Mother of Jesus, symbolic of all goodness and purity, runs free. The bright heavenly light in thesky gives divine blessing for the deed, and serves as a halo over the saint.

Influenced by St Maximus

St Maximus on Dr John Dunn. St Maximus

Influenced by St Maximus - two blogs transferred to the archive in readiness for consolidation into a future publication.

Dr John Dunn 2022.

Resurrected Creation

“We experience a relationship of sorts to the Logos at the very inception of thought.”

“I am moving towards a position that sees the Creation as the Resurrection and vice versa.”

Creation and the Resurrection the same?

“In reflected thought man is subsumed in the One, so awakening is Creation.”

“But reflected thought is fallen thought, so awakening is Resurrection.”

“Either way, in reflected thought man exists before the Beginning, beholden to Ananke.”

Amidst whole congregations

Blakes Urizen on Dr John Dunn. William Blake's depiction of Urizen

Amidst whole congregations in Urizen's 'Synagogue of Satan'.

Dr John Dunn 2022.

The implication of the blog transferred into the archive today is that we all enter the ‘Synagogue of Satan’, most never to leave.

There is a certain necessity to all this, as the blog explores, for those who pass through to freedom that is.

For those stuck in the synagogue, as one of the congregation worshipping Urizen, as William Blake described it, freedom will only ever be rhetorical…

…where to live ‘rhetorically’ is to be subject to the conventions of social life, rather than being in full possession of oneself.

The opposite of the rhetorical life and the evil represented by Blake as the 'Synagogue of Satan’ is pure and simply love. However:

Before Love is known, man must take his seat amidst whole congregations in Urizen's 'Synagogue of Satan'.

5 blogs on the theme of Love

Sunday, 8 May 2022 at 21:25

The great Simone on Dr John Dunn. 5 blogs on the theme of Love

Dr John Dunn 2022.

A series of five related videos transferred to the archive.

Love Logos and creativity are coterminous.

Creation is an act of love and it is perpetual.

Those who murdered Love and continue to do so must be rooted out.

Love perpetual

Only when the practice of living thought is achieved will man move beyond the animal, i.e. thinking that is suitable to the beyond-human dimension, or to the Logos of the Creation, to achieve independence from the reflected thought of animal corporeality, during life. It involves the awakening of the soul through the interjection of Love, the perpetual continuation of the first Creation.

Escaping Beulah

Encouraged by the followers of Urizen, man is dragged down into the passivity of Beulah, where is heard constantly the nauseating refrain - ‘I just want to be happy…’

Until liberated, he will suffer and rejoice illusorily, because the Logos content of each experience is lost.

Liberation comes with the restored marriage between thinking and the will.

We see a tantalising shadow of such liberation in human love…

Love, the originatory principle, is the true meaning of human love…

Root them out

Once Love is found, the Logos is found. The Logos virginally fertilises the soul. This moment coincides with the Creation.

The presence of the Logos is realised because it is perceived.

The doors of perception are opened.

‘If the doors of perception were cleansed,’ William Blake once wrote, ‘everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.’

The murderers of Love contaminated the doors of perception, and continue to do so.

They must be rooted out…

Love and perpetual creativity

Living thought is Love and perpetual creativity.

Living thought is Love, the perpetual continuation of the first Creation.

Urizen and his followers, who would keep the innocents in a sub-human state, know that only Love can cleanse ‘the doors of perception’. They were driven to murder Love and continue to do so.

Violation, disruption and overturning

…in normal everyday accepted modes of thought the 'I' is absent. The connection to ‘living thought’, before it falls, is not only a connection to the Logos, but also to the 'I'.

This connection to the Logos and the 'I' is an encounter with the ‘source of life’. The Logos and the ‘I’ are coterminous at this point.

The Logos is incarnated in the ‘I’.

…the‘I’ cannot achieve the break from Ananke by its solipsistic self, it needs the violation, disruption and overturning of equilibria by Love.

3 for the Archive

An awakening caress on Dr John Dunn. 3 for the Archive

Dr John Dunn 2022.

Three blogs have been selected for the archive as part of my collection of material for future publication. Short and sweet the particular blogs may be, but they do capture glimpses of the bigger picture that is now well formed in my mind.

I encountered a living being, that is, an intelligence endowed with the power to act according to an extra-human order, even if it was active within the earthly sphere and within an animal being. I met an angel, an emissary of Love.

All thought is fallen thought

All thought is fallen thought, or reflected thought, i.e. originatory shaping thought reflected back as though it originated in an external material reality…

Love as the Creation

I think of the awakening by Love as the Creation, rather than an echo of a previous Creation.
