New dawn on Dr John Dunn. Dawn

Dr John Dunn 2022.

I did another blog on a similar subject to the one posted below, a little later than this, entitled Precursors. The precursors in question were precursors to the light, not the light, but each bore witness of that light. In other words this blog and Precursors are about the dawn just before the Beginning.

This provides an opportunity to ask two open-ended questions. Is the Beginning in a personal sense a metaphor for the cosmic Beginning, or vice versa? Or are they one and the same?

Light passed through

Dr John Dunn 2022.

He knew there was something there, almost at the end of my school life. He would have rather been in the Thoor Ballylee writing poetry... but he was stuck with teaching, even though he was too good for it. He battled on despite nagging disappointment, always fierce and serious; but I felt newly confident and understood in his presence. He tried to coax life out of me, often hoping for responses to books that I had not properly read. Yet he knew there was something there, somewhere.

This Fenian had caught me at the time of first love, my love for Butterfly -when the tiniest of fissures in the Eros egg were allowing the faintest of soul-light to pass through. It was late in the school year, but his influence helped me to engineer a life of the mind when just about everything else (the forest of much later realisation) conspired against this. I chose the lowest threshold option into university possible and just scraped together the qualifications to get there. I did it all myself. Something was driving me. I created space - space to read and think.

Thoth Tarot and all

Crowley on Dr John Dunn. Thoth Tarot and all

Dr John Dunn 2022.

Globalised mainstream thought has its apparent opponents, but collectively they form a controlled opposition.

If you control what is taught in schools, if academics are in your pay, if you control publishing across all the media, why would you allow a genuine opposition? It stands to reason that all opposition is controlled.

If the controlled opposition of so-called rebels is selected and their exposure is in turn controlled, then only the thinkers writers and intellects from the past, whose work reinforces globalised mainstream thought, will get on to the curriculum, appear in the galleries, remain on publishers’ lists, have PhDs and biographies written about them etc. Likewise the new media of our own time will only give exposure to today’s ‘rebels’ if what they have to say serves to consolidate the protocols of what is considered acceptable.

Aleister Crowley is a case in point. I was drawn to both him as an interesting historical figure and his occultism because, whatever I thought of his life work as an alternative world view, he did appear at least to offer an alternative world view. However, that temptation passed. Upon further reading and consideration, Thoth Tarot and all, it turns out that Crowley, like all ‘rebels’ serving the mainstream, was a consolidator, not a disruptor. His role was, and remains, to keep everyone in Beulah, mentally, let alone physically.

I include below the first thoughts I had about Crowley once the occultist mystery had dissipated.

One like the others

Dr John Dunn 2022.

The more I consider Aleister Crowley, the more do I come to understand him as no more than an advocate of mainstream western thought, which is emanationist, kabbalistic and freemasonic. He was a consolidator rather than a rebel.

Emanationism sees the manifestations of the cosmos as unwilled and necessary, and modes of existence of an infinite, undiminished, unchanged primary substance.

The various modes of existence, including mankind, are often explained as an outflow of beings of descending perfection from the infinite and originatory substance.

Salvation is often thought of as rising through the stages of emanation to become one with the ‘Active Intellect’.

And this, it seems to me, is what Crowley advocates. The tarot ‘fool’s journey’ as he understands it, is to start from 0, i.e. the original and unspoken Logos, travel through all of life’s emanations, struggle to ‘do what thou wilt’, only to accept that one is ultimately inseparable from the originatory substance. This is the salvific journey.

Emanation and pantheism go together in that everything is considered to be an emanation of the one underlying reality. There is no separation from the One, only the illusion of separation.

The human response to emanationism has been to accept that any notion of separation from the One is illusory and that, in reality, man has to accept that he is not a free and creative entity with a free will. The truth is that free thinking can only aspire to the acceptance of necessity. The response ultimately to emanationism is the suicide of the self.

Emanationism has its roots in Pre-Socratic philosophy, Orphism and other related Greco-Roman origin myths, Helenistic Judaism, Gnosticism, Neoplatonism, Jewish Kabbala, freemasonry and modern materialistic science. I have limited this list to Western schools and in doing so acknowledge the exclusion for now of the emanationism which is the foundation of many Eastern religions.

Modern emanationism has its roots in the Iberian expulsion of the Jews and Luria’s modification of Kabbalah to suit an exilic mindset. Spinoza took much from Luria, influencing western philosophy and economics, particularly through John Locke and Karl Marx.

Crowley and his ilk are thus to be considered as cheerleaders for, rather than rebels against, the dominant thought forms of the western mainstream. In fact the entirety of the western canon of art, literature, philosophy and science serves to bolster this emanationist, kabbalistic and freemasonic western tradition through figures as diverse as Spinoza, Locke, Berkeley, Nietzsche, Hegel, Baudelaire, Blake, Steiner, Marx and Engels, Voltaire, Rousseau, Darwin,Heidegger, Freud, Jung, Blavatsky, Steiner, Pollock, Warhol. The immediate political manifestation of emanationism is globalism. The psychological impact of emanationism upon the individual is the suicide of the self.

Evolutionism differs from emanationism in that it claims to be directionless (though often theories stress progress). In evolutionism the transformation and development of matter forms the constitution of the universe, whilst in emanationism the primal source or principle remains unchanged as everything else proceeds from it.

What does not change in evolutionism is the Law, the continuous unfolding of the Law of Evolution. The individual remains subject to the Law of Evolution.

…beginning of the Beginning

Ananke statue on Dr John Dunn. …beginning of the Beginning

Dr John Dunn 2020.

So having conceded that there can only be metaphor, symbol and allusion, I have established the beginnings of a mythology, a creation myth, a cosmogony.

Returning back to my initial thoughts on the Beginning, i.e. the violation of Ananke by Eros, i.e. by Love, I have added below my Ananke-Eros juxtaposition, which holds in embryonic form a Zarathustrian counter-polarity of Evil v Good, though not in a fully formed and finished manner, and with further development to be done. Suffice to say that equilibrium is on the pole of Evil and violation and disruption is on the pole of Good.

‘Ananke - Eros’

Dr John Dunn 2020.

Ananke- goddess, indestructible force, bestower of love and life, upholder of the law of fate and ultimate destruction, giver and destroyer.

Eros - primordial God of Creation and Life - symbol of the divine likeness of man.

Ananke- Entropy, Chaos, oneness, heat-death in which the world will be reduced to one vast temperature equilibrium in which nothing new ever happens, death.

Eros - anti-entropy, diversity, individuality, developmental potential, life.

Ananke - equilibrium, unviolated.

Eros - disrupter, violator.

Ananke - passive.

Eros - dynamic, creative.

Ananke - Mistress of the Labyrinth, cave, darkness, deepest mystery.

Eros - bringer of light, penetrator, painter of the cave, artist.

Ananke - Aphrodite, Demeter, Mother Earth, Nature, animal, despair, woman.

Eros - son, new birth, Renaissance, human, hope, man.

Ananke - FEMME FATALE.

Eros - LOVE.

Wondering

Wondering

Dr John Dunn 2022.

I was left wondering about closed systems and how truly to burst out of them.

There can only be metaphor, symbol and allusion.

In my mythological cosmogony, Ananke is the symbol of undifferentiated Oneness, equilibrium, the endless repeating cycle and entropic death. The champion of violation is Eros, the victims of equilibrium are the Innocents, the promoters of the One are the Children of Urizen. Ultimately the contest is between Love and Evil.

In the one infinite Cosmos without man, there would be no ‘that is’, there would be no ‘be’ing.

Where there is no being, there is void, no-thing; there is 0. Without man, 1=0.

And it all started with a wondering.

‘Violating 0’

Dr John Dunn 2022.

My belief is that life has always something to do with breaking out of closed systems. The very act of birth is the physical act of breaking free - but life is more than this.

A closed system is an equilibrium of one sort or another that remains unviolated; this is just as true at a cosmic as well as an individual level.

For life to break free the cosmos had to be violated, just as an individual must be violated to attain life.

I am equating life here to consciousness and mind. Breaking out of a closed system is a coming to consciousness. It is the emergence of mind.I am equating life therefore to something that is uniquely human; to humanness.

The emergence of life as consciousness and mind has been argued for before on an evolutionary basis. For example, Rudolf Steiner argued that only the mind of man can continue and complete the evolutionary purposes of God.

There was also Vladimir Vernadsky’s concept of the noosphere, in which the sphere of nous, i.e. of mind, is an evolutionary stage higher than the biosphere, i.e. the world of minerals, plants and animals; but yet again, Vernadsky placed the emergence of consciousness and mind within a structured evolutionary process.

Both Steiner and Vernadsky had consciousness and mind within processes of evolution and therefore remaining in closed systems.

This leaves me wondering about closed systems and how truly to burst out of them; how to violate the equilibrium in order that there might be life, or that life might be. For to break free is a coming to being, with the implication that not to break free is to exist in a state of non-being, or locked in the closed circle of 0.

Originatory?

Wednesday, 1 June 2022 at 20:51

1=0 on Dr John Dunn. Originatory?

Dr John Dunn 2022.

I apply the word ‘originatory’ to the Beginning, the first principle of everything, i.e. the ‘Originatory Principle’.

Strictly speaking it is not a word; in most cases ‘original’ would suffice nicely.

I feel that in the context of my attempted cosmogony, the word needs to be more active than original. ‘Original’ feels like the first and last and only, i.e. an original act once done is over and gone.

‘Originatory’ feels to me more alive, i.e. original, but with an ongoing originality.

As a consequence the expression ‘Originatory Principle’ will be found throughout my recent and forthcoming writings.

…then there was One

Dr John Dunn 2022.

My previous blog referred to the false, dead realm of Ananke, as it was before the Beginning, before ‘be’ing, before Love, Logos, God. What was that dead realm? It was one infinite nothingness. Let me explain.

We all know what nothing is, but only if it is a qualified nothing.

There is nothing …in this box
There is nothing …in this room
There is nothing …between you and me
I searched for gold and found nothing.

In these instances, nothing is delimited by a qualification.

We know there is oxygen, nitrogen and carbon dioxide in the box, but the qualification denotes the nothingness to be agreed upon.

We know that the prospector might have dug up a pile of sand and dirt in the search for gold, but we know what nothing means because of the qualification.

Nothing is actually nothing plus qualifier.

Can there be nothing without qualification?

Can there be unbounded nothingness, or infinite nothingness?

Let us suppose the answer is yes; there can be unbounded nothingness.

However, would not that state, that everlasting equilibrium, be a single nothingness, an all-embracing oneness?

We have the paradox of one equaling nothing.

You might say that before the Beginning, before the Originatory Principle, there was not nothing, but rather there was one.
