Before the beginning

Renaissance art excelling on Dr John Dunn. The Resurrection by Pierra della Francesco

Death, resurrection and cosmic Beginning

Dr John Dunn 2022

In a strange sense, there is actually something before the Beginning.

It is without form, and void, and dark.

It is all sameness and oneness.

There is something before the Beginning, and that something is death.

It is this that links the cosmic Beginning, which is a metaphor for the personal Beginning, with death and resurrection.

Before the beginning

In the beginning does not come first.

What came first was without form, and void, and dark.

Ananke came first, the One, the forever, the undisturbed, the inevitable.

In the beginning was love.

Love as the ‘originating Principle’ can have no presupposition.

Love can strike at any time.

Love has the power of creation.

Love has the power of imagination.
When William Blake claimed that the imagination is God, he was rejecting God as a presuppositional object of idolatry, locating the Divine instead in the mind of man.

…he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him. (1 John 4:16)

I have added below an extract from my Child of Encounter:

Śūnyatā,nothing, voidor emptiness, the starting point, the nature of the Supreme Consciousness or Shiva. Śūnya, the word for zero, the Bindu beyond one and many and beyond human intellect. Sacred symbol of the cosmos in its unmanifested state, the point around which the cosmos is created, applied to the forehead. Śūnya, 0, the ultimate self- regulating system, the ultimate equilibrium. Even its symbol a circle is closed, admittingof no intervention. Yet an intervention was made, a breaking open of the circle. What was capable of a spontaneous act of such creativity, such immense childish frivolity?

A Vision of Beulah

Urizen at his net on Dr John Dunn. ...and Urizen casts his net (William Blake)

In the Beginning is Love

Dr John Dunn 2022

The Originatory Principle, as I have termed it, is Love. In the Beginning is the Word, i.e. Logos, Love. God is Love.

So does evil originate after the Beginning?

No.Evil is a carry-over from what was before the Beginning, i.e. the Realm of Ananke, the interminable equilibrium, the uninterrupted cycle of destiny.

Ananke’s Realm was all sameness, all oneness, where there was no mind to confirm upon this one entity the status of being. For what is it to be? ‘To be’ is to be distinguished as one thing from another. To be is the ‘that is’ of the observer's mind.

In an infinite Cosmos before Love, there was no ‘that is’, there would be no ‘be’ing.

Where there is no being, there is void, no-thing; there is 0. Without Love, 1=0.

The carry-over from before the Beginning is evil.

The forces of evil work to return to all sameness, all oneness, to 0, nothing, non-being, death.

Amongst the anti-Love there can only be self-hatred.

A Vision of Beulah

And Ananke created Urizen to distract the innocents away from the eternal God,

And Urizen’s jealousy of mankind brought forth self-hatred in himself, which in turn brought forth his vengeful hatred of Eros,

And the children of Urizen inherited this self-hatred, which in turn festered their vengeful hatred of Logos, God, the Word, the Cosmic Jesus, living thought, creativity and Love,

And after murdering Love, they sought to drag mankind down into the innocence of Beulah, a place of dumb idiocy, where all is commodity, everything has its price, and all have equal rights,

And in Beulah the differences of social status were defined by money, in a world where money makes more money,

And diversity and difference were expunged by reducing status and the measure of human estimation to that which is easily calculable,

And money turned desire for gain into the sole motive, outweighing all other motives, because the effort it demands of the mind is so very much less; nothing being so clear and so simple as a row of figures,

And out of self-hatred and vengeful hatred, the children of Urizen reduced the innocents to a parody of themselves,

And creativity died.

And Urizen cast the net of debt over all.

Eros egg on Dr John Dunn. Love supreme

Dr John Dunn 2022

It has to be remembered throughout the readings of my developing Mythology that the cosmic Beginning is to be understood as a metaphor for the personal Beginning. What I have termed the Originatory Principle, i.e. Love, is the Beginning in both readings. This was certainly not as clear when I first posted the re-issued blog featured below.

Love comes first as a disruptor of equilibrium, (the equilibrium being innocence), in both the cosmic and personal readings.

In the beginning

And the Cosmos was without being,

And the Cosmos without being was the One,

And having no being, the One = nought, 1 = 0,

And Ananke, undifferentiated Oneness, equilibrium, the endless repeating cycle, stasis, reigned supreme.

In the beginning was Love, acknowledged also as the Logos, the Word, God, the Cosmic Jesus, living thought, creativity.

And Love violated Ananke,

And cosmic innocence was lost, felix culpa,

And Eros emerged from the Cosmic Egg.

So what happened in Covehithe?

St Andrew's Covehithe on Dr John Dunn. So what happened in Covehithe?

Dr John Dunn 2022

I motorcycled over on my Royal Enfield to discover the history of the place. Between Lowestoft and Southwold on the Suffolk Coast, what once was a large town in medieval terms has now dwindled to a handful of cottages.

Click here to see the YouTube video of my visit.

What is more, today’s village is dominated by the ruin of a 14th century parish church that is cathedral-line in its proportions. This tells us one thing at least; quite clearly Covehithe was a town with considerable wealth to finance the building of such a noble and grandiose edifice.

Where did the wealth come from? Well a large amount would have come from the agricultural activity on the land hereabouts. Srfs farmed the land, paying a tithe to the Lord of the Manor and the church. Out of this would be taken the funds to build the church.

However, additional wealth came from Covehithe’s role as a port, loading and unloading the sailing ships of the day. Hithe means quay or small harbour. Where did this port activity go?

The answer is that it all was swallowed up by the sea, including swathes of agricultural land. Covehithe stands on the most rapidly eroding coast of the British Isles.

So, loss of land and loss of harbour meant loss too of wealth. The church was way too big for the falling number of parishioners to maintain, and it was allowed to fall to ruin. It was replaced by a humble plain tiny church, complete with humble thatched roof, actually sited within the crumbling walls of it’s gigantic predecessor.

I captured something of the essence of my experience at Covehithe on video.
Click here and share something of the journey to the Suffolk coast and back… in time.

Covehithe on Dr John Dunn. New YouTube video

Dr John Dunn 2022

By Royal Enfield to Covehithe in Suffolk, the lost town and port.

One more in a series of motorcycle tours that I have captured on video.

This one finds me on the Suffolk coast, unearthing remarkable history from the Middle Ages.

Covehithe, once a town substantial enough and with enough wealth to build a gigantic parish church of cathedral-like proportions. All that's left today is a gigantic ruined church, a handful of cottages and a road that runs over a cliff.

"So where did the town and port of Covehithe go? Let’s take a walk.

There it is, over the edge there, the once thriving port of Covehithe, the wealth of which financed the building of the great church.

The coastal cliffs at Covehithe are formed of glacial sands and other deposits. Loose and unconsolidated, they erode rapidly, currently at around 4.5 yards a year.

At this current rate of erosion, there’ll be no Covehithe for anyone to see in a hundred years time."

YouTube is my store of motorcycling memories.

So if you’d like to join me on another ride, just like and subscribe, perhaps even share, and you’ll then know when I’m next out and about.

For now I’m done.

Conundrum

Ananke, destiny, on Dr John Dunn. Ananke by Gilbert Bayes

Originatory Principle needs no explanation

Dr John Dunn 2022

By its very nature, the Originatory Principle, as I have termed it, needs no explanation, indeed, it cannot be explained.

Love came first, and there lies the mystery, Love cannot be explained, especially to those with no Love in their lives.

What is clear is that there exists an anti-Love, worshippers of the state of Oneness that preceded the Beginning, before ‘be’ing. In this anti-Love will be found the state of evil that preceded the Beginning.

So what drew Love to Evil in the first place?

The answer lies in some relationship to creativity, and creativity is another way of describing the Originatory Principle, or Logos if you like.

As above, so below… in the re-posted blog which follows.

Conundrum

And why is Eros tempted by evil?

Ananke, symbol of undifferentiated Oneness, equilibrium, the endless repeating cycle and entropic death, is Evil’s closest ally.

Eve was drawn to the Serpent.

The champion of violation is Eros, but why? Why is Love so drawn to Evil?

Why is the urge to violate the daughters of Ananke so irresistible to Eros, the son of Love?

It is because the urge to create is the defining aspect of man, just as it is the defining aspect of Love, the first Creator.

Eros is driven to break the daughters of Ananke and end the cycle.

Man is driven to penetrate the still darkness of the cave and paint on the walls.

Your soul will never be known entirely;
But for Eros, you would never be known at all.
All I can hope is to enter
And paint my dreams on your wall.

Man is driven to cross the water and penetrate new continents.

I looked over the still dark waters and saw you there,
Eternal, wild, and infinite.

Is creativity, that is violation, encouraged by Love?

An angel occupied your body and spoke to me… touched me… and drew me towards the Divinity.

Thus spake

Saturday, 23 July 2022 at 10:22

Zarathustra on Dr John Dunn. Zarathustra, Nicholas Roerich, 1931

Eros went down the mountain alone

Dr John Dunn 2022

Its always painful being awoken to the fact. Zarathustra knew it, as did Eros.

Tell them where you’ve been Eros…

I have been to before the Beginning.

What saw you there?

I saw Ananke and the interminable realm over which she reigned.

What did you there?

I violated the still dark waters.
The connection to the following re-issued blog is, I hope, to some small extent, becoming clear.

Thus spake

Eros went down the mountain alone.

An awakened one is Eros: what will you do in the land of the sleepers?

Could it be possible! They have not yet heard of it, that God is dead!

Teach them Eros! Tell them where you’ve been.

I climbed the heights to look down upon the Synagogue of Satan.
You think you see the Creator, but He is not an entity apart.
What you see instead is Urizen, the demiurge, a self-deluded and anxious shaper of pre-existent matter.
When you worship Urizen you worship Satan, the puppeteer pulling the strings of mankind, the over-bearing father, the failed architect, the ‘Accuser of the World'.
You have been infected by the children of Urizen into Devil Worship.

Man must and will have some religion; if he has not the religion of Jesus, he will have the religion of Satan, and will erect the Synagogue of Satan. (William Blake)
